Why are my floors cold in winter?
In most Vernon homes with cold floors, the crawlspace below has little insulation, wet insulation, or gaps that let cold air in. We find the cause during the free inspection.
Cold floors in a Vernon winter usually start under the house. We insulate crawlspaces across Vernon and Coldstream so the floors stay warm, the pipes stay safe, and the space under your home stays dry.

A crawlspace with little or no insulation pulls heat out through the floor all winter. In Vernon, where overnight lows stay below freezing for months, that means cold feet in the kitchen, a main floor that never warms up, and water lines at risk of freezing.
Moisture is the other half of the problem. Bare earth and poor ground cover let damp air rise into the crawlspace, where it soaks old batts and invites mould and pests. Insulation that has fallen or gone wet stops working. A properly insulated and sealed crawlspace keeps the warmth in and the damp out.
There are two ways to insulate a crawlspace, and the right one depends on your home:
We recommend one approach after we see the space, not before.
The crawlspace is where soil gas enters many homes. If you are insulating, it is the right time to add a radon barrier. See our radon barrier page.
Home Renovation Rebate Program (HRRP): the program pays $0.09 per square foot for each R-value point added to basement or crawlspace walls, up to $1,200. Insulating the floor over a crawlspace instead pays $0.07 per square foot per R-value point, up to $1,000. The program pays one rebate for either the crawlspace walls or the floor over the crawlspace, not both.
Combine your crawlspace with an attic upgrade and you may qualify for the multi-upgrade bonus. Insulation must be installed by a Home Performance Contractor Network member like us. We confirm what your home qualifies for at your free estimate.

It depends on how the home was built and what runs through the crawlspace. Many crawlspaces with pipes and ducts perform better sealed and insulated at the walls. We assess yours before recommending either.
