Insulating your crawlspace is one of the best ways to cut your energy costs and receiver energy rebates

It is becoming rarer for new home construction to include crawlspaces throughout Canada. However, some new builds still have them, and indeed older houses do. Ensuring your crawlspace is insulated can have substantial cost savings, and it keeps your home well protected.

During the colder months, if you feel like your floors are cold, and you seem to be losing lots of your heat, there's a good chance your crawlspace isn't insulated, or it is poorly insulated. Think of your crawlspace as a mini basement where both heat and cool air can escape, leaving your living space not the ideal temperature.

Cost Savings From Insulation

The obvious reasons to have crawlspace insulation are comfort and savings. By preventing heat from leaving the central part of your home, your furnace and air conditioner become more efficient. In addition to your house being energy efficient and saving on those monthly costs, Fortis rebates and BC Hydro rebates are available. Both of them have opportunities for over $5,000 in rebates. Plus, you can receive up to $5,600 in grant funding through a Canada Greener Homes Grant.

Tips For Insulating Your Crawlspace

Before insulating your crawlspace, it's best to check if there are any requirements based on the specs of your space, and from there, you can determine the best course of action. You never want to insulate your crawlspace floor, but you may want to cover it with a vapour barrier to prevent moisture and bugs from coming in, leading to potential mold growth and infestations. You will want to insulate all the walls but not the ceiling. It is best to have your subfloor above the crawlspace between the floor joists insulated.

Spray foam insulation is one of the best options when it comes to insulating your crawlspace. It provides an air and moisture seal along with a high R-value and is quick to install. We strongly recommend hiring a professional spray foam installer because working with spray foam takes a high level of expertise.
